Granite Countertops

Advantages Disadvantages

High-end countertops are often made of granite, marble, and limestone, which are beautiful natural materials. Generally there is a great selection of colors and price ranges. Natural stone countertops are water-resistant, heatproof and very durable. Surface finishes range from polished to honed (matte) and even rougher textures. A number of thicknesses are available and edges can be shaped in numerous ways. Granite countertops and marble countertops in particular are a worthwhile investment as they have been proven to add a great deal to the resale value of a house.

There is a more limited supply of stone retailers and stone counters need to be installed by professional countertop installers. Oil, alcohol, and any acid (even chemicals in some water supplies) can stain marble or limestone countertops and damage the finish, so these materials may not be suitable for kitchen countertops. Granite is more durable and will not be damaged by any of these liquids. No matter what type of stone is used a quality sealer is a necessity.

As for price, solid slabs of stone provide the most dramatic impact, but they are very expensive. Some designers suggest stone tiles – including slate – as a less expensive choice.
