Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring is a recently marketed flooring option which is particularly popular in this environmentally conscious era. Bamboo is a member of the grass family of plants, and is a more renewable resource than the hardwood trees that are typically used for flooring in North America. Bamboo reeds grow back quickly after harvesting and mature in a few years, unlike hard wood trees which take decades to reach full maturity. Bamboo grows to around 50 feet in height after only a few years and is therefore a much more renewable resource than hardwood trees.

Once the bamboo reeds are harvested, they are cut into strips which may be soaked in chemical agents, depending on the manufacturer, to kill any insects and mildew which may be present and to make the bamboo meet fire safety standards. Since the bamboo boards aren't chemically stained it is an excellent option for people with asthma or chemical allergies.

Laminate Flooring

If you are considering installing laminate flooring in your home, the first thing you should do is head out to the stores in search of samples from various brands and price ranges. Examine and ask to take home as many samples as you find appealing and affordable. You will need to take two pieces of each sample so you can test how well they lock together. Obviously your first concern will be the color and appearance of the laminate, but don't stop there.

Examine the surface texture of the various laminate samples. A flat, plastic, unnatural look on a sample piece will look all the more pronounced when installed on a floor surface, and even an untrained eye will know that the floor is not real wood. An attractive laminate floor will look like it is made of real wood unless the viewer takes a really close look. It should have a color that is similar to one that is available in real wood, and should have a wood grain pattern that is not too obviously repeated from piece to piece. In high quality laminates, the texture will also feel like real wood, and you will be able to see and feel the wood grain pattern on the surface of the laminate.

Ceramic Tile Flooring

When selecting floor tiles there are numerous options, which will be explored in this article. To begin with, you should consider whether tile is the right choice for your needs. All tiles tend to be cold on the feet, though this can be solved by installing a radiant heating system. Tiled floors are also hard by nature and are less giving on the knees than other flooring options such as hardwoods, laminates or cork flooring. Therefore, tiles may not be the best option for those with arthritis or other joint ailments. The hardness of tiles also means that fragile items will most likely shatter when dropped.

There are a few different ways to install tiles, and professional installation is strongly recommended. The best and also most expensive method of installing tiles is to set them directly into mortar over the concrete slab or plywood subfloor. A lesser option of installation is to apply the tiles to a concrete backboard and/or subfloor. Once this is done, all tiles are joined using grout.

Hardwood Flooring

Advantages
Hardwood flooring provides a classic and warm ambience. It feels good underfoot, and can be refinished if need be. Oak flooring is the most common, though maple, birch and other species are also available.

Disadvantages
Moisture damage and inadequate floor substructure are incompatible with quality hardwood flooring and need to be addressed before the hardwood is installed. Hardwood is fairly high- maintenance, not all surfaces can be mopped or waxed, and generally special cleaning products are needed. Laminate flooring in particular cannot get wet as it will quickly warp. Bleaching and some staining processes may wear unevenly on hardwood flooring, and are difficult to repair.

Natural Stone Flooring

Traditional stucco application consisted of two to three coats of plaster with varying finishes-from smooth to a rough trowel finish. The biggest drawback with stucco is cracking and damage from freeze and thaw in cold areas. However, on stable soil with static hydration, cracks can be kept to a minimum. A bit of high- quality flexible caulking that can be painted will usually do the trick. Good ventilation and paint is the best means of preventing freeze-thaw damage. Severely cracked or discoloured stucco can be recoated in time.

Carpeting

Advantages
Carpeting is comfortable, provides traction, and helps reduce sound. It can be kept clean by vacuuming and occasionally shampooing.

Disadvantages
Generally, the more elaborate the material and weave, the greater the problems from moisture absorption, staining, and mildew. Carpeting used in bathrooms should be short-pile and unsculptured. Woven or loop-pile wool should be confined to dressing areas. Nylon and other synthetic carpets are a wiser choice for splash zones since these are washable and hold up better in moist conditions.

Vinyl Flooring

Advantages
“Resilients” are generally made from solid vinyl or polyurethane, and are commonly referred to simply as “vinyl flooring”. They are flexible, moisture and stain resistant, and are easy to install and maintain. Using a polyurethane finish may eliminate the need for waxing. Resilient flooring also provides a comfortable surface underfoot.

Disadvantages
Resilient flooring is relatively soft, making it vulnerable to dents, burns and tears. However, such damage can often be repaired. Tiles which are improperly installed may collect moisture between seams. Some vinyl still comes with a photographically applied pattern, but most is inlaid; the latter is more expensive, but it wears better.
