Granite Countertops

Granite is a popular option for kitchen counters, particularly in high end gourmet kitchens. Like marble, granite is a natural stone which is mined and polished for a rich look. Granite offers the distinct advantage of being extremely hard and non-porous, unlike marble. Most kitchen ingredients, like vinegar or oil won't stain, burn or harm granite. However, grime and grit should be cleaned promptly to avoid scratching and damaging the finish of granite.

In terms of cleaning, granite is a fairly low-maintenance material, which can be cleaned with mild household cleaners and a sponge or cloth. To be on the safe side, test any new cleaning product on an inconspicuous area.

In comparison to Silestone countertops granite countertops are less heavy and are relatively cheaper. Granite countertops will on average cost $55-$95 per square foot including installation.

Over time, the sheen on the granite may become dull, particularly in high-use areas, but this can be restored by buffing with an electric buffing machine. For optimal maintenance of granite, it should b e resealed annually to ensure that it maintains it's natural sheen.

Advantages Disadvantages

High-end countertops are often made of granite, marble, and limestone, which are beautiful natural materials. Generally there is a great selection of colors and price ranges. Natural stone countertops are water-resistant, heatproof and very durable. Surface finishes range from polished to honed (matte) and even rougher textures. A number of thicknesses are available and edges can be shaped in numerous ways. Granite countertops and marble countertops in particular are a worthwhile investment as they have been proven to add a great deal to the resale value of a house.

There is a more limited supply of stone retailers and stone counters need to be installed by professional countertop installers. Oil, alcohol, and any acid (even chemicals in some water supplies) can stain marble or limestone countertops and damage the finish, so these materials may not be suitable for kitchen countertops. Granite is more durable and will not be damaged by any of these liquids. No matter what type of stone is used a quality sealer is a necessity.

As for price, solid slabs of stone provide the most dramatic impact, but they are very expensive. Some designers suggest stone tiles – including slate – as a less expensive choice.
