Corian Countertops

Corian is a manmade material for countertops that has been available for a few years now. Esthetically it looks like a cross between plastic laminate and natural granite, but it offers the distinct advantage of offering the option of riding oneself of the traditional stainless steel kitchen sink: the sink can be made of the same corian material as the rest of the countertops, thus providing a unified appearance. In addition, there is virtually no gap between the sink and countertop, which provides a sleek appearance. This is particularly appealing from a health and safety point of view as there are no seams and crevices where germs can hide and grow.

Chipped or cracked Corian Countertops can be easily refinished to their original appearance and as a result Corian Countertops will retain their original luster for a very long time.

Advantages Disadvantages

This material gives a high-end appearance at less of a cost than granite or marble countertops. It is durable, water-resistant, heat resistant, nonporous, and easy to clean. This marble-like material can be shaped and joined with virtually invisible seams. Different edge treatments are available. It allows for a variety of sink installations, including integral units that combine both basin and countertop. Blemishes and scratches can be sanded out.

It is expensive, and requires professional fabrication and installation for best results. Given its weight, this type of countertop needs very firm support below. Until recently, color selection was limited to white, beige, and almond though stone patterns and pastels are now common. Costs climb quickly for wood inlays and other fancy edge details.
